His novels and short stories are populated with characters who are buffeted by history, conflict, family strife and communal upheaval.

His novels and short stories are populated with refugees from war, colonialism and historical injustice.

On october 7th the Swedish Academy awarded Abdulrazak Gurnah, a Tanzanian writer based in Britain, the Nobel prize in Literature for 2021 for “his uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee in the gulf between cultures and continents”. He became the first black African writer to win the accolade since Wole Soyinka, a Nigerian novelist and playwright, in 1986.

1. award sb sth=sth be awarded to sb:

The 2021 Nobel Prize for Literature has been awarded to the Zanzibar-born novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah whose novels deal with the violence, indignities and dislocations of colonialism and the refugee experience.

A few years later Mr Gurnah, fearing persecution on account of his Arab heritage, was forced to flee. He travelled to Britain to study and became a professor of English at the University of Kent. His exile made him acutely aware of the challenges faced by people who are forced to leave home and create new lives for themselves.

3. the Nobel prize in Literature for 2021有几种说法都可以,如the 2021 Nobel Prize for Literature, the 2021 Nobel literature prize。

The penetration of the Internet into our daily life raises concerns about privacy.

Wireless transmitters, typically on street lights, have difficulty penetrating walls.

Only about a third of Nepal is covered by a mobile telephone signal. Internet penetration is a mere 2 per cent.

Sometimes people have trouble accepting accolades.

7. He became the first black African writer to win the accolade since Wole Soyinka, a Nigerian novelist and playwright, in 1986. 这句在金融时报上的平行文本是the first time a black African author has won since the Nigerian novelist and playwright Wole Soyinka took the award in 1986。

His two best-known works are “Paradise” (1994), the determining novel in the Nobel committee’s decision, and “Afterlives”, published last year, which picks up where “Paradise” ends. “Paradise” tells the story of Yusuf, a young Tanzanian boy at the turn of the 20th century who is pawned by his father to an Arab merchant to whom he owes moneyIn a nod to Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness”, Yusuf joins the merchant’s caravan and travels to Congo, before returning to east Africa where the German army is forcing young African men to fight on its side in the first world war. “Afterlives” is the story of what happens to these battle-weary young soldiers as they try to pick up their old lives when the war is over.

His two best-known works are “Paradise” (1994) and “Afterlives”是主干,the determining novel in the Nobel committee’s decision是“Paradise” (1994)的同位语, published last year是“Afterlives”的后置定语, which picks up where “Paradise” ends是“Afterlives”的定语从句,to whom he owes money是an Arab merchant的定语从句,where the German army is forcing young African men to fight on its side in the first world war是east Africa的定语从句。

2. picks up where “Paradise” ends:Pick up表接过…… Can I just pick up that gentleman's point?

He is contemplating pawning his watch.

4. In a nod to:对……

5. Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness”:

8. fight on its side:on one’s side

9. what happens to these battle-weary young soldiers as they try to pick up their old lives when the war is over:字面意思是当战争结束后,这些厌倦战争的年轻士兵试图重拾旧日生活时发生在他们身上的故事,其实说简洁点,就是当战争结束后,这些厌倦战争的年轻士兵试图重拾旧日生活的故事。

In Gurnah’s 10 novels and numerous short stories, he has frequently tackled themes of exile, racism as well as immigration.

Though Afterlives is told in a simple but lyrical language, the events described reveal shocking racism and violence, though they never stray into cliché or parable. The narrative is always rooted in real human interactions. Ordinary people, affected by events over which they have little or no control, take centre stage.

He avoids simplification, caricature and cliché. Bobby was a good young man but he was lost. By giving into temptation, he strayed. Then disillusioned.

The story is a pleasing parable of the problems created by an excess of wealth. The minister preached a sermon on the parable of the lost sheep.

3. take centre stage:

Ordinary people take centre stage, affected by events over which they have little or no control是Ordinary people的状语over which they have little or no control是events的定语从句,可以还原为they have little or no control over events。

In Gurnah’s literary universe, everything is shifting — memories, names, identities.

An unending exploration driven by intellectual passion is present in all his books.

His books are full of the turmoil of conflict and suffering; yet, for all that, they are imbued with a deep humanity.
