Speech by Consul-General Zhao Jian at the 2018 Australia-China Youth Dialogue

尊敬的琳达·德绍州督阁下，

The Hon Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria,

来自中澳两国的青年朋友们：

Young Friends from China and Australia,

我很荣幸应邀出席今天的2018年中澳青年对话开幕式。自2010年设立以来，这一对话平台为中澳两国各行业的优秀青年提供了互相了解和开展思想碰撞的机会，搭建了跨文化交流和发展长期友谊的桥梁。出席今年对话的双方代表有许多是中澳各领域合作的亲身参与者。大家共聚一堂，为中澳关系发展建言献策，这让我对中澳长期友好、合作共赢的未来充满信心。

It is an honour for me to join you at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Australia-China Youth Dialogue.

Since its inception in 2010, the Dialogue has served as a platform for young talents from different sectors in China and Australia to meet and exchange views with each other, building bridges for inter-cultural exchanges and long-term friendship.

Many of you present here today have been personally involved in China-Australia cooperation in various fields. The brainstorming you are going to have here will contribute positively to the development of our relations and you are the reason why we are full of confidence about a future of enduring friendship and mutually-beneficial cooperation between our two countries.  

中澳两国自1972年建交以来，双方交往合作取得长足进展，给两国人民带来了实实在在的利益。中国已连续多年成为澳大利亚最大贸易伙伴、最大出口市场和最大进口来源国。每年双方人员往来已超过200万人次，有约20万中国学生在澳大利亚留学。经澳大利亚政府“新科伦坡计划”资助赴华留学的澳大利亚青年有近8000人。两国青年一代已经成为中澳合作重要的参与者、贡献者和受益者。

Since China and Australia established diplomatic relations in 1972, considerable progress has been made in our exchanges and cooperation, which has spurred our respective economies and brought real benefits to our people.

China has been Australia’s largest trading partner, largest export market and largest source of import for many years in a row. As things now stand, there are more than two million mutual visits between us each year, about 200 thousand Chinese students are studying in Australia, and nearly 8,000 Australian students have gone to study in China under the sponsorship of the New Colombo Plan initiated by the Australian government. The young people have become important participants, contributors and beneficiaries in the development of China-Australia cooperation.

今年的对话选在墨尔本召开。维多利亚州是澳大利亚人口和经济第二大州，又被誉为“文化之都”、“教育之州”，发展对华合作具有得天独厚的优势。在双方的共同努力下，中国已是维州最大的贸易伙伴、最大的留学生来源地和最大的旅游收入来源国。日前维州政府与中方签署“一带一路”合作谅解备忘录，成为澳首个正式参与“一带一路”合作的州区。阿里巴巴、滴滴出行等创新型中资公司纷纷落户墨尔本。维州有60多家企业已经前往上海参加11月5日开幕的首届中国国际进口博览会。中国与维州建立在相互尊重、相互信任基础上的长期伙伴关系正在不断深化，也得到双方民众越来越广泛的支持。

This year, the Dialogue is held in Melbourne, Victoria. Being Australia’s second largest state in both population and economy and the cultural capital and education state, Victoria is in a unique position to develop cooperation with China. Thanks to our joint efforts, China is now Victoria’s largest trading partner, largest source of international students and largest source of tourist receipts.

Recently, Victoria and China signed an MOU on “Belt and Road” cooperation, making Victoria the first Australian state to formally participate in the Belt and Road cooperation.

With some big-name innovation-driven Chinese companies like Alibaba and Didi coming to Melbourne to open offices and over 60 Victorian businesses going to Shanghai to attend the first China International Import Expo to be held on 5 November, the long-term partnership between China and Victoria based on mutual respect, mutual trust and mutual benefit is growing from strength to strength and contributing more to our common development and prosperity.

青年是我们的希望和未来，你们不仅拥有广阔的发展空间，也承载着伟大的时代使命。你们既是追梦者，也是圆梦人。希望你们抓住时代赋予的责任和机遇，充分展示青年人的活力、创造力和行动力，继续保持对发展中澳友好关系的热情，在各自领域大展宏图，为推动中澳关系健康稳定发展作出积极贡献！预祝此次对话圆满成功！

Youth are our hope and future. You have great potential not only to pursue personal development but to fulfill the important missions of the times. You have not only great dreams but the ability to make dreams come true.

I hope you will rise to the responsibility and opportunities of the times and fully leverage your vitality, creativity and capability to make greater accomplishments in your respective areas. I also hope you will maintain your enthusiasm and support for China-Australia friendship and do more to promote the sound and steady development of China-Australia relations.

To conclude, I wish the Dialogue a complete success!
