经济学人小词大用：historic

《经济学人》在11月8日的一篇关于中日合办养老院的文章中，提到“历史性的睦邻友好之举”时，有这样一段话：

Rather few Chinese will ever be able to afford Japanese-style homes, it is true. That does not make their expertise irrelevant. If China’s old enemy can raise the profile of kindly, attentive dementia care, that alone would be a historic, neighbourly act.

参考译文：只有极少数的中国人能负担得起进日式养老院的费用，这是不争的事实。但这并不意味着日本的养老专业知识在中国无用武之地。如果中国的这一宿敌能够提升自己在老年痴呆症护理方面亲切周到、关怀备至的形象，这本身会是历史性的睦邻友好之举。

1、从这段话的语境，我们可以看出，historic在这里的意思是“历史性的，具有历史意义的”。我们先看看historic的英文释义：

Something that is historic is important in history, or likely to be considered important at some time in the future. 

即 历史(性）的; 具有重大历史意义的 ；历史上著名（或重要）的；比如：

1）The area is of special historic interest.

这个地区有特别历史意义。

2）a historic building/monument

有历史意义的建筑 / 纪念碑

再如，2018年政府工作报告中也有类似表述：

经济社会发展取得历史性成就，发生历史性变革

In economic and social development, we have made historic achievements and seen historic changes.

2. 近义词辨析：historic在使用时，特别容易与近义词historical混淆，这里我们谈谈二者的区别：

1）historic通常用以表示具有重要历史意义; 

Historic is usually used to describe something that is so important that it is likely to be remembered. 

e.g.the historic changes in Eastern Europe.东欧的历史性变革

2） historical通常涉及历史、史学、过去的具体客观事实；

Historical usually describes something that is connected with the past or with the study of history, or something that really happened in the past.

e.g. I have been doing some historical research.我一直在进行史学研究。Was Robin Hood a historical figure?罗宾汉是历史人物吗？

3）Historical常用于表达“创历史（上的）新高”，这里强调的是历史上的，也就是时间上来说，所以也是和2）一样在说客观事实。

比如外刊经常这样说hit/peak a historical high, 我们在写作中可以借鉴使用这个表达。比如：

e.g.In recent years, Guangxi Tourist Industry has developed rapidly and its main  indexes of development hit the historical high. 

近年来，广西的旅游业发展很快，主要发展指标再创历史新高。

First, China's input in science and technology has increased to a historicahigh.

中国在科技投入方面创历史新高。
