我们高斋CATTI和MTI全年班上上周在练习2019年政府工作报告，其中有这样一句话：农业再获丰收。译文是Harvests were again good.
可能有同学会疑惑为什么这里的”“农业”不翻译为agriculture，这就涉及到了汉语中冗余的名词和动词（ Unnecessary Nouns and Verbs）在翻译时应该如何处理的问题。
在《中式英语之鉴》第一页就有冗余的名词和动词如何识别以及处理的讲解，在中式英语中，通常此类冗余的名词都不是单独出现的，而是辅以冠词和介词出现在短语中。若需删去这类名词，那么也要相应删去与其相连的冠词和介词。
此类冗余的名词都比较容易识别，通常情况下具体分为以下几类：
1. 范畴词
A: “enhance the relationship of cooperation with...”
B: “enhance cooperation with....”
译文：“加强合作关系”
讲解：句子中已经包括或暗含此类名词的意思，这类名词一般为范畴词（解释性名词），比如可以直接译为，没必要译为，这个短语中的“relationship”就是一个范畴词。汉语表达中需要加上一些范畴词来使表达更加流畅、通顺，但翻译时若照搬译出来，则不符合英语表达中的简洁原则。
2. 核心动词已经包含的词
A: to accelerate the pace of economic reform
B：to accelerate economic reform
译：加快经济改革
讲解：在“加快经济改革”中，“accelerate”一词已经包含“速度”的意思，“To accelerate= “to increase the pace of，故翻译时就没有必要将“peace”译出。
A: it is essential to strengthen the building of national defense
B: it is essential to strengthen national defense
译：加强国防建设至关重要
讲解：在“国防建设”这个词组中，strengthen sth就包括了“建设”，因此无需翻译出 the building of。
3. 不言而喻的词
A: there have been good harvests in agriculture
B: there have been good harvests
译：农业丰收
讲解：harvest [n], the crops that have been gathered, or the amount and quality of the crops gathered 收成；收获量 (朗文词典) 该词本身就指“农作物的丰收”，既然是农作物肯定是农业方面的丰收了，在译文中没必要再特别体现“agriculture”一词。[Harvests"implies agriculture: there are no harvests industry]。2019年政府工作报告中的“农业再获丰收”就属于这一类，因为既然说harvests，这里就说的是农业的丰收，所以不言而喻，不需要翻译为harvests in agriculture，不然就是中式英语了。
A: living standards for the people in both urban and rural areas continued to rise
B: living standards in both urban and rural areas continued to rise
译：城乡居民生活水平继续提高
讲解：“living standard”生活水平 （生活水平肯定对人而言的），故此类表达中无必要体现“people”一词。但是这里有一个特例，那就是在表示“民生”时，会翻译为 people’s well-being/livelihood，例如2018年政府工作报告中“提高保障和改善民生水平”的译文是Doing more to ensure and improve people’s well-being.
4. 颜色范畴词
A: these hardships are temporary in nature
B: these hardships are temporary
译：自然环境艰苦是暂时的。
讲解：任何形容词修饰名词都是为了表明名词的某种性质或特点，即形容词修饰名词时，形容词本身以将名词本身所属范畴表示出来了，所以就没有必要再将范畴词（如上文中的nature/color/number）列出来。hardships are"temporary in nature "这种表达就好比汉语中“中国的国旗在颜色上是红的”、“大熊猫在数量上是少的”等此类说法，因此无需加上“in nature”。
5. 时态词
A :the development of our economy in the future will, to a large extent, depend on
B: the development of our economy will depend to a large extent on......
译：我国的经济发展未来将在很大程度上依靠....
讲解：“will ”已表明是将来时态，故没必要再加上“in the future”。注意is now和was once/at once是可以并用的，经常两个时态词表示强调。
6. 复数名词的修饰成分
A: we should adopt a series of measures to ensure that
B: we should adopt measures to ensure that
译：我们应采取一系列措施来确保...
讲解：“measures”，名词复数已涵盖“a series of”“一系列”。[here the plural form of"measures"covers the sense of a serises.]
7. mechanization and electrification这些词已经包含了 realization
A: following the realization of mechanization and electrification of agriculture
B: following the mechanization and electrification of agriculture
译：继农业机械化和电气化之后
讲解：mechanization and electrification本身就可以表示“机械化和电气化”，加上了 the realization of 对原文意思并没有补充作用，删去它原文意思并没有减弱，因此无需赘述。
8. 弱化中心词的词
A: these constitute important conditions in striving for the fulfilment of the general task in the transitional period
B: these are important conditions for fulfilling the general task in the transition period
译：这些是完成过渡时期总体任务的重要条件
讲解：striving for的意思就是“努力实现”，在汉语中经常出现这样的词汇，表示强调，“完成总体任务”这个短语中汉语的动词中心词是“完成”，因此直接翻译用fulfill即可，fulfill前面是介词for，因此用fulfilling，加上striving for反而弱化了fulfill，反而觉得这句的重心是striving for，而不是fulfilling了。因此这里的 striving for 实属多余，应该删去。
A: the key to the solution lies in the curtailment of expenditure
B: the solution is to curtail( or: cut back on)expenditure
译：解决方案的关键在于削减开支。
讲解：“key”一词在某些情况下是必要的，但通常情况下皆可省去。在“解决方案的关键”这个短语中，中心词是“解决方案”，并不是“关键”，使用“ the key to the solution”在一定程度上弱化了solution的地位，key to的使用也会使句子增添一些不必要的成分。所以直接用the solution is to do sth句型。
看了《中式英语之鉴》，很多人说发现自己学的是假英语。其实不是学了假英语，而是不少人学英语的时候就没有太认真，没有认真区别细节用法，没有认真思考自己这样写是不是过于中式，也没有打开bing或Google等网站去搜索地道平行文本。碰到一个句子就直接字对字翻译，各种词堆砌在一起。
所以啊，平时学习的时候还是得多精读外刊，多注意细节区别。上全年班的学员知道，我把一篇外刊扣得很细，连一个介词都不放过。这样看似很费时间，但是正是这样的日积月累，我在写作和翻译中才能尽量避免使用中式英语。
