Message on the International Volunteer Day

Every year on 5 December, the world observes International Volunteer Day.

每年12月5日，全世界都会庆祝国际志愿人员日。

This year, we are highlighting the important contributions of volunteers to the response to COVID-19.

今年，我们要强调志愿人员为应对2019冠状病毒病做出的重要贡献。

Around the world, volunteers have been assisting vulnerable groups, correcting misinformation, educating children, providing essential services to the elderly, and supporting frontline health workers.

世界各地的志愿人员一直在帮助弱势群体，纠正错误信息，教育儿童，为老年人提供基本服务，并支持一线卫生工作者。

As we gradually recover from the pandemic, volunteers will have a key role to play in accelerating the transition to green, inclusive and just economies.

随着我们逐渐从疫情中恢复过来，志愿人员将在加速向绿色、包容和公正的经济转型方面发挥关键作用。

Indeed, volunteering is the backbone of our societies.

的确，志愿服务是我们社会的支柱。

Often working with the United Nations, volunteers build a sense of togetherness.

志愿人员经常与联合国合作，建立团结精神。

They strengthen social cohesion.

他们增强社会凝聚力。

And they help to protect communities, especially by reaching those most at need.

他们还协助保护社区，特别是帮助那些最需要帮助的人。

That is why, on International Volunteer Day, I appeal to all governments to promote volunteering, support volunteer efforts and recognize volunteer contributions to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

因此，正值国际志愿人员日之际，我呼吁各国政府促进志愿服务，支持志愿工作，承认志愿人员为实现可持续发展目标所做的贡献。

Volunteers deserve our heartfelt thanks.
