2019年11月CATTI三笔汉译英真题是有关杭州的介绍，第一段是这么说的：

作为中国浙江省省会，杭州是中国历史文化名城。距今约5300年的“良渚文化”遗址（位于杭州余杭区）是中华文明发祥地之一。

这段很简单，但是再简单也有不少细节值得分享给大家看看。今天公众号“高斋CATTI”就给大家分享下这段的翻译讲解。

好，现在我们一句一句来看！

原文：作为中国浙江省省会，杭州是中国历史文化名城。

这句话很明显“杭州是中国历史文化名城”是主要成分，主干是“杭州是名城”，所以建议还是扣原文翻译出city；“作为中国浙江省省会”是次要成分。

这句其实是一个很典型的句型“作为……，是……”，最简单的翻译就是“as the capital of Zhejiang Province, Hangzhou...

“作为……”也经常处理为同位语。所以“作为中国浙江省省会，杭州……”可以翻译为：

Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province, ...

这种句型很常见，如金融时报上这句：

Phnom Penh, the capital, lacks a functioning train station.

作为首都，金边没有一个正常运行的火车站。

我们再看看“历史文化名城”的翻译。

“文化”很简单，是cultural；

那“历史”怎么翻译呢？

其实翻译为historic或historical都可以，不过从使用频率来看，historic较高，表示有历史意义的。

分享几个外刊句子：

I was recently invited to a friend's wedding in the historic city of Oxford.

最近，我应邀前往历史名城牛津参加一个朋友的婚礼。（金融时报）

We have a beautiful city and an historic city, and it's really upsetting to me seeing this going on.

在一个这样美丽而历史悠久的城市里，对我来讲，看到这种情况非常令人心烦意乱。（经济学人）

The Socialists say the fringes of historic towns will be destroyed.

社会党人表示这将会毁坏名城古镇的外围。（经济学人）

所以，第一句可以翻译为：

Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province, is a renowned historic and cultural city.

其中renowned也可以说well-known或famous.

well-known其实也可以转换为动词短语，即be known a，所以这句也可以翻译为：

Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province, has been known as a historic and cultural city.

注意：

the capital of Zhejiang Province中the加上的情况居多，不过不加也可以，毕竟省会是唯一的。

Zhejiang Province在国内是首字母大写，但是经济学人里面基本是小写。

如经济学人上这句：

When grapes are ready for harvest, Mendoza, capital of the Argentine province that shares its name, throws a party. 

我们再看第二句：

原文：距今约5300年的“良渚文化”遗址（位于杭州余杭区）是中华文明发祥地之一。

这句话的翻译需要注意几个点。

首先"“良渚文化”遗址"在UNECO网站上是The Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City，但是也有地方是The Liangzhu Culture ruins.

其次，“距今约5300年的”怎么说？

我们说数字比较大时可以把约数翻译为一个整数，所以这个最简单的翻译就是用5,300-year-old，距今约5300年的“良渚文化”遗址（位于杭州余杭区）就翻译为：

The 5,300-year-old Liangzhu Culture ruins (in Yuhang District, Hangzhou)

距今多少年也就是可以往回追溯多少年，英文里有一个表达是date back，今天我们重点看一下date back的翻译。

注意，date back to中to的“到”的意思，所以后面跟某个时间点，比如具体年份，或是跟... ago，如经济学人上的这个例句：

In America the first patent dates back to 1790 and was signed by George Washington.

在美国，第一项专利要追溯到1790年，由乔治·华盛顿签署。

还比如领导人讲话中这句：

中国和东盟国家山水相连、血脉相亲，就像一个大家庭。双方友好交往源远流长。

China and ASEAN countries are linked by the same mountains and rivers and live alongside each other like members in one big family. The friendly exchanges between the two sidesdate back to a long time ago.

date back后面可以跟一段时间，也就是date back ... years，比如金融时报上介绍巴克莱银行这句：

Barclays, whose origins date back 300 years, has had a well-established private bank serving its UK home market for many years.

巴克莱有着300年的历史，拥有一家声名卓著的私人银行，多年来服务于英国本土市场。

所以，今天这个“距今约5300年”也可以翻译为date back more than 5,300 years.

距今约5300年的“良渚文化”遗址（位于杭州余杭区）可以用which定语从句连接，翻译为：

The Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City (in Yuhang District, Hangzhou), which dates back 5,300 years.

也可以用现在分词作后置定语，翻译为：

The Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City (in Yuhang District, Hangzhou), dating back 5,300 years.

然后，这里需要注意下(in Yuhang District, Hangzhou)，英语中有这种用法，可以放在括号里面。

当然，如果你把“距今约5300年……“翻译为The 5,300-year-old Liangzhu Culture ruins 的话，这句话也可以把“位于”翻译为located in，放主语后面，这种很常见，即：

The 5,300-year-old Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City, located in Yuhang District (Hangzhou),is...

注意：原本第一句使用了Hangzhou，这句我们可以用指代的the city，但是这句有个Liangzhu City，避免重复和引起歧义，我放括号里面了，即 (Hangzhou)。

其次是“发祥地”的翻译。

“发祥地”这个词也是个CATTI和MTI考试高频词汇，绝对是送分的！

18年11月CATTI三笔汉译英真题河南篇我就讲过一模一样的，那句话是这么说的：

河南是中华民族和文明的重要发源地。

Henan Province is an important/major birthplace/cradle of Chinese civilization.

“发祥地”和“发源地”其实是一个意思，翻译为birthplace，cradle。

所以，“是中华文明发祥地之一”可以翻译为：

one of the cradles of Chinese civilization. 

an important birthplace of Chinese civilization. 

an important birthplace也可以说a major cradle。
