今天公众号“高斋翻硕”给大家分享19世纪英国作家、诗人艾米莉·勃朗特（Emily Jane Bronte）的小说《呼啸山庄》（Wuthering Heights）节选的单词解析。

《呼啸山庄》是19世纪英国文学的代表作之一。小说描写吉卜赛弃儿希斯克利夫被山庄老主人收养后，因受辱和恋爱不遂外出致富。回来后对与其女友凯瑟琳结婚的地主林顿及其子女进行报复的故事。全篇充满强烈的反压迫、争幸福的斗争精神，又始终笼罩着离奇、紧张的浪漫气氛。

While enjoying a month of fine weather at the sea-coast, I was thrown into the company of a most fascinating creature, a real goddess, in my eyes, as long as she took no notice of me. I never told my love vocally; still, if looks have language, the merest idiot might have guessed I was over head and ears; she understood me, at last, and looked a return-the sweetest of all imaginable looks-and what did I do? I confess it with shame -shrunk icily into myself, like a snail, at every glance retired colder and farther; till, finally, the poor innocent was led to doubt her own senses, and, overwhelmed with confusion at her supposed mistake, persuaded her mamma to decamp. By this curious turn of disposition I have gained the reputation of deliberate heartlessness, how undeserved, I alone can appreciate.

1. the company of sb：有谁的陪伴，在……陪伴下，和……在一起。如柯林斯词典这句：

罗斯总是喜欢有女人陪伴。

2. Creature：生物、傀儡，人。这里指人，如如柯林斯词典这句：

She's charming, a sweet creature. 

她很迷人，是个可人儿。

第二句：I never told my love vocally; still, if looks have language, the merest idiot might have guessed I was over head and ears; she understood me, at last, and looked a return-the sweetest of all imaginable looks-and what did I do?

1. Vocally：美 [ˈvoʊkəli] 表直言不讳，口头上，如to communicate vocally口头交流。

2. over head and ears：深陷于，全心投入。如句酷这句：

She is over head and ears in scientific research.

她把全身心都揣入到科研之中。

3. at last：最后，终于，如如柯林斯词典这句：

At last things were beginning to look up.

情况终于开始好转了。

第三句：I confess it with shame -shrunk icily into myself, like a snail, at every glance retired colder and farther; till, finally, the poor innocent was led to doubt her own senses, and, overwhelmed with confusion at her supposed mistake, persuaded her mamma to decamp. 

我羞愧地忏悔了——冷冰冰地退缩，像个蜗牛似的；她越看我，我就缩得越冷越远。直到最后这可怜的天真的孩子不得不怀疑她自己的感觉，她自以为猜错了，感到非常惶惑，便说服她母亲撤营而去。

1. Confess：美 [kənˈfes]承认，忏悔，如如柯林斯词典这句：

You just go to the church and confess your sins.

你干脆去教堂忏悔自己的罪过吧。

2. Shrunk：shrink的过去式。缩小，缩水，退缩，和后面的retire意思差不多。

3. Sb be led to doubt sth：主动是lead sb to doubt sth，表示导致某人怀疑某事，如金融时报上这句：

This has led some to doubt longer-term sustainability, particularly in markets such as London, where there is a danger of oversupply.

这让一些人质疑该行业的较长期可持续性，尤其是在伦敦等市场，那里存在供应过量的危险。

4. overwhelmed with confusion：这里是原因状语，这样就好理解了the poor innocent, overwhelmed with confusion at her supposed mistake, persuaded her mamma to decamp. 其中overwhelmed with confusion表示不知所措，感到非常惶惑。

5. Decamp：美 [dɪˈkæmp] 突然离开，如柯林斯词典这句：

We all decamped to the pub.

我们全都溜到酒馆里去了。

第四句：By this curious turn of disposition I have gained the reputation of deliberate heartlessness, how undeserved, I alone can appreciate.

由于我古怪的举止，我得了个冷酷无情的名声；多么冤枉啊，那只有我自己才能体会。

1. turn of disposition：性情转变。Disposition，性情，如柯林斯词典这句：

The rides are unsuitable for people of a nervous disposition.

骑马这一活动不适合天性易紧张的人。

2. Undeserved：不应得的，冤枉的，不公正的，如柯林斯词典这两句：

The criticism was totally undeserved.

这批评纯属冤枉人。

Douglas has an undeserved reputation for being dull and dry.

道格拉斯呆板无趣的名声并不副实。

3. Appreciate：欣赏，体会，领会。
