It is simple enough to say that since books have classes — fiction, biography, poetry — we should separate them and take from each what it is right that each should give us. Yet few people ask from books what books can give us. Most commonly we come to books with blurred and divided minds, asking of fiction that it shall be true, of poetry that it shall be false, of biography that it shall beflattering, of history that it shall enforce our own prejudices. If we couldbanish all such preconceptions when we read, that would be an admirable beginning. Do not dictate to your author; try to become him. Be his fellow-worker and accomplice. If you hang back, and reserve and criticize at first, you are preventing yourself from getting the fullest possible value from what you read.

It is simple enough to say that since books have classes—fiction, biography, poetry—we should separate them and take from each what it is right that each should give us.

1. It is + adj + to say that +从句,意为“说....

It is safe to say that the next Congress, keen to seize a rare opportunity, will wish to govern as though that half of the electorate did not exist.

Biography must to some extent delineate characters.

Yet few people ask from books what books can give us. Most commonly we come to books with blurred and divided minds, asking of fiction that it shall be true, of poetry that it shall be false, of biography that it shall be flattering, of history that it shall enforce our own prejudices.

She suffered from dizziness and blurred vision.

2. flattering [ˈflætərɪŋ]

There were pleasant and flattering obituaries about him.

To enforce its rulings, it relies on local bureaucrats over whom it has no authority.

Maybe, as a former Goldman Sachs chief executive, he did let his prejudice against Fuld get the better of him.

If we could banish all such preconceptions when we read, that would be an admirable beginning.

1. Banish [ˈbænɪʃ]

Mukesh Ambani, a Gujarati industrialist and one of the world's richest men, gushed that Mr Modi would soon “banish poverty” .

True creativity and genius depends on an unfiltered view of the world, one that is unconstrained by preconceptions and more open to novelty.

3. Admirable [ˈædmərəbl]

The symphony is admirable in conception.

Do not dictate to your author; try to become him. Be his fellow-worker and accomplice.

What right do they have to dictate how we live our lives?

Dictate to somebody

For a start, it is illiberal to dictate to others what they can wear, especially when those others form a religious minority.

2. Accomplice [əˈkɑːmplɪs]

As plans took form in her mind, she realized the need for an accomplice.

If you hang back, and reserve and criticize at first, you are preventing yourself from getting the fullest possible value from what you read.

But, as the situation stands, foreigners are right to hang back from sending in ground troops.
