Judging from the scientists I know, including Eva and Ruth, and those whom I’ve read about, you can’t pursue the laws of nature very long withoutbumping into beauty. “I don’t know if it’s the same beauty you see in the sunset,” a friend tells me, “but it feels the same.” This friend is a physicist,who has spent a long career deciphering what must be happening in the interior of stars. He recalls for me this thrill on grasping for the first time Dirac’s equations describing quantum mechanics, or those of Einstein describing relativity. “They’re so beautiful,” he says, “you can see immediately they have to be true. Or at least on the way toward truth.” I ask him what makes a theory beautiful, and he replies, “Simplicity, symmetry, elegance, and power.”

单词解析

第一句：Judging from the scientists I know, including Eva and Ruth, and those whom I’ve read about, you can’t pursue the laws of nature very long without bumping into beauty.

我认识的科学家，像伊凡和卢斯，还有我通过阅读了解的科学家，普遍认为人们在探索自然界规律的过程中，很快便能与美不期而遇。

1. those whom I’ve read about这里的whom I’ve read about是those的定语从句。

2. read about 读到，通过书籍（报纸等）了解，熟悉，今天的意思是通过阅读了解到。

3. the laws of nature是固定表达，含义是“自然界规律，自然规律”，注意the不能丢，并且是laws。回忆一下之前第10届韩素音汉译英里面讲过的类似的结构，“生命的颜色”the color of life；“大自然的底色”the color of nature。

4. Bump [bʌmp]（无意地）碰，撞；（尤指身体部位）碰上，撞上；颠簸行进，文中的Bump into指的是偶然遇见。

第二句： “I don’t know if it’s the same beauty you see in the sunset,” a friend tells me, “but it feels the same.”

“我不清楚那份美是否如你从日落中感受到的一样，”一位朋友对我说，“但对我而言，两者是一样的。”

1. if it’s the same beauty you see in the sunset是know的宾语从句；you see in the sunset是 the same beauty的定语从句，省略了that。

2. 这句中the same beauty和the same注意有the。

第三句：This friend is a physicist, who has spent a long career deciphering what must be happening in the interior of stars.

朋友是位物理学家，长期致力于解开恒星内部的奥秘。

1. Physicist [ˈfɪzɪsɪst] 物理学家。

2. Decipher [dɪˈsaɪfər] 破译；译解；译码；译解密文；解密器。

3. who has spent a long career deciphering what must be happening in the interior of stars整体是physicist的定语从句，这里面有一个spend time doing的用法，所以是deciphering。

第四句：He recalls for me this thrill on grasping for the first time Dirac’s equations describing quantum mechanics, or those of Einstein describing relativity.

他向我回忆起第一次领会狄拉克的量子力学方程式和爱因斯坦的相对论方程式时，他是如何欣喜若狂。

1. Grasp [ɡræsp] 抓紧；抓牢；理解；领会；领悟；明白；急忙抓住，毫不犹豫地抓住（机会），今天这里是领会的意思，如经济学人例句：

And he failed to grasp that the only way to get Congress to support far-reaching entitlement reform is to give both sides a stake in change.

他也没能领会唯一能让国会支持这项影响深远的权利改革的办法是让两边都分一杯羹。

2. Equations [ɪˈkweɪʒnz]  方程；等式；方程式；方程组；数学关系式。

3. Quantum mechanics 量子力学。

第五、六句：“They’re so beautiful,” he says, “you can see immediately they have to be true. Or at least on the way toward truth.”

“它们如此美丽，”朋友说道，“你几乎马上明白这就是真理，或者至少是在通往真理的大道上。”

1. on the way toward truth是固定表达，注意the不能丢。含义是“通往真理的大道”，也可以说on the way to truth。

第七句：I ask him what makes a theory beautiful, and he replies, “Simplicity, symmetry, elegance, and power.”

当被问及是什么让理论如此美丽时，他的回答是，“简洁，对称，优美，力量。”

1. Simplicity [sɪmˈplɪsəti] 返璞归真；简单；简单化；朴素

2. Symmetry [ˈsɪmətri] 对称；相似；相仿；相等，今天这里的意思是对称。
