一个人的语言与其在社会中的身份其实密不可分。记得我在澳大利亚生活时，一位邻居要竞选议员，他便每天早上起来练习发音，以令自己的讲话让人听起来悦耳、有身份。的确，语言是一个人社会身份的标志，特别是在多民族、多元文化的社会里。所谓“身份”，也是一种知识结构，表明你来自那个社会群体的文化背景、知识程度甚至地理位置等。
A person’s language and social identity are in fact an inseparable entity. When I was in Australia, as I can recall, my neighbor practiced his speaking every morning, making it both pleasant and a privilege to hear, for the purpose of getting into parliament. Language is indeed a marker of social identity, especially in a multiethnic and multicultural society. The so-called identity may also be considered as a knowledge structure, identifying cultural background, knowledge level or even the geographical location of the social group the person belongs to.
1. “其实”很好翻译，这里用的是in fact，放在了be动词之后，也可以放在句首，或者是as a matter of fact，这个表达非常常见，大家可要记牢了啊。
2. “密不可分”翻译为名词词组an inseparable entity，注意冠词an不能丢。inseparable含义是“不可分离的”，这个我们的课程里面也讲过很多次。举个经济学人的例句：
They had grown up believing that the Germans saw their own interests as inseparable from those of their fellow Europeans.
在成长的过程中，他们一直相信德国人视自己的利益和欧洲兄弟们的密不可分。
3. “以令自己的讲话让人听起来悦耳、有身份”making it both pleasant and a privilege to hear这里的it指的是speaking；“有身份”翻译为a privilege，注意冠词a不能丢，这个地道的表达大家要记下来。
4. “社会身份的标志”a marker of social identity，当做固定表达记下来，注意冠词a不能丢，也可以说a symbol of social identity，这个表达我们的课程里面也讲过，跟着学的都记得吧？
5. “是一种知识结构”，这里的“是”翻译为be considered as，这里的as也可以省略。或者用be deemed as/be regarded as，后一个regarded as的as不能省，不要混淆了，我们的课程里面也讲过。
6. “你来自那个社会群体”翻译为the social group the person belongs to，这里的the person belongs to是the social group的定语从句，省略了that。可以能有同学用comes from，就没有belongs to地道。
